Tammy: A Review
I went into this movie feeling like it might be underwhelming. I'd heard bad things. A boss of mine tried to steer me away from this movie, but I figured I'd see it anyway. I've gone to McCarthy's movies for a while now, and some of them are relatively amusing on some spectrum. (For example, I thought "Identity Thief" was OK, but "The Heat" just felt like overdone crude trash.) Well, this was a pretty unfunny affair. It was almost kind of depressing. "Take a character that's in a whole lot of crummy situations, and send her off on a road trip with an alcoholic. Should be funny right?" No. It's not. It's uneven, too. It tries to make you care about the characters when they get sad for a moment, but that doesn't work. I don't think I truly laughed once watching this. It was a shame to see Susan Sarandon, Dan Aykroyd, Sandra Oh, Toni Collete and Kathy Bates in this drivel.

The Good: Good actors, despite a bad script.

The Bad: Script is terrible and unfunny. Brings back memories of stuff like "The Hangover III". Just depressing from beginning to the end.

It's More About Grandma's Life. And I Disappointed.
At first, the comedy looked so funny. What a poor woman, Tammy is. But you are so so so stubborn. But until Tammy got fired (or resigned according to herself), the story became so flat. It was too constrained. Almost all of it. The comedy became too mainstream to me. And maybe if the story only focus to Tammy, I mean not about a grandchild babysitting a grandmother, the story would be stronger. I myself had prepared to see how Tammy's handle the chaos in her life, but I didn't get what I want. It's more about the grandma's life.

I really hate Susan's hair. Can you get a better wig to look old? And... If I didn't read the blurb after I finish the movie (Yes, I always read the blurb after, not before), i would be so lost about this movie. I wouldn't see the point.
A distasteful comedy with flat jokes, stale humor
Melissa McCarthy brought the best of her comedic showcase in the action comedy "The Heat" with Sandra Bullock. McCarthy however, doesn't manage to bring out this road trip comedy with co-star, Susan Sarandon. Instead what we are treated with is stale humor, flat jokes, and dialogue that never seems to flow well. I was highly disappointed in this movie, and found myself laughing only once........... Just ONCE!!! Then the rest of the film left me in complete boredom.

Melissa McCarthy plays Tammy, an irresponsible woman who is fired from her job after failing to arrive at work on time. Even worse, she comes home to find her boyfriend cheating on her. She embarks on a road trip with her grandmother, played by Susan Sarandon, to help get pass her dilemma.

This movie fails on so many levels. The entire plot never seems to get anywhere, and the comedic chemistry between McCarthy and Sarandon is almost nonexistent. There were the characters spit out some one-liners that are so cheesy it was getting depressing. There are no sex jokes that I found remotely funny. There were some F-bombs here and there, they never make the film any funnier or cruder. There is even a robbery scene, as shown in the trailer, where I momentarily got my hopes on finally seeing something funny, and they were sadly letdown.

This movie is nowhere near as funny as other Melissa McCarthy films like The Heat or Bridesmaids. If you want see a funny film, watch one of those two, not this one.
The two leads don't have chemistry, good or bad.
Silly pseudo-roadtrip movie about granddaughter McCarthy and grandmother Sarandon (who are only 24-years apart in real life) hoping that adventure and freedom will solve all the problems they're running from, only to realize that it's their relationship that requires the most mending… with (an attempt at) hilarious consequences. Even if one tries to pass this off as an innocent little chick-flick—which is indeed completely fine!—it's still difficult to find anything beneath the cheap laughs and bland plot. McCarthy fits the role well, but her strong personality inevitably upstages the beloved Sarandon—the duo just doesn't have the right chemistry.

Honey Boo Boo grew up!
My wife and I almost walked out. We were at the nice theater with drinks and food. That is the only reason we stuck it out. I think i giggled once in the movie. It's like honey boo boo grew up. Not too funny IMO. Should have just filmed trees growing or something.

I don't consider myself a critic and have never written a review before but this show is a complete waste of time and money. The only funny parts to the movie were in previews. Actually there were parts in the actual scenes than the previews so I can say the previews were more funny than the actual scene. For instance the apple pie reference was funny in the preview but not in context when in the show. I guess people do buy books because of what the cover looks like. Do your self a favor. Watch the previews a couple of times then move on. You will be much more satisfied. My worst movie since idle hands.
A movie with the title of the main character usually means that person is kind of… you know… unique and, um... special... Well in a matter of speaking, the latter fits TAMMY since it's a "labor of love" by star Melissa McCarthy, serving as a producer and co-writer along with her husband and the film's director, Ben Falcone.

We begin with Tammy hitting a deer, the first similarity to Chris Farley's TOMMY BOY, and not the last: Both centering on a self-evasive, overweight slacker with a heart of gold, our husky heroine, TAMMY, revels in her problems, including a wrecked car, lost job, cheating husband and a comparably raw and restless grandmother…

Enter Susan Sarandon, the reason TAMMY is being compared to the iconic feminist cult flick, THELMA & LOUISE... But be warned: this is not a road movie. After a quick highway montage, promising themselves an adventure full of cathartic mileage, Tammy and Sarandon's bluntly honest Pearl hit a snag after one night of drinking. At this point the movie repeats itself with saucy conversations about how Tammy needs a point in life, and Pearl needs less men, pills, alcohol. And so, as a loose cannon, Sarandon doesn't provide very much input or purpose.

For an actress with her talent and long-lasting career, with the exception of a gray mop of a phony looking wig, she doesn't seem to be the age she's playing... Instead of trying to portray an old lady who tries to be young and gets away with it, but still suffering just a bit, deep down, she's just... Susan Sarandon. And McCarthy has little to offer as well, having, along with her husband, written a story so self-absorbed, it hardly seems catered to an audience at all. (More at CultFilmFreaks.com)
It could have been funny...
The trailer didn't sell me on this one but I won't lie and say I wasn't secretly hoping for a surprise comedy wonder here. I didn't get it.

While "Tammy" has some amusing moments and there is a sweet development in the film between Tammy and Mark Duplass' character, the film suffers from a sloppy story that feels very disconnected and really needed to be feathered out more, the jokes aren't that funny, and Tammy is a very unlikable character (no amount of McCarthy's charm and comedic talent could make this character work). None of this is really surprising since this is the first film written by the husband and wife team of Melissa McCarthy and Ben Falcone. It's all about growing pains and getting better with experience.

"Tammy" isn't terrible, it just wasn't funny. It feels like its wandering around with no real direction and that applies to both the comedy it holds and the story it tells. I wanted more from this film because I really like Melissa McCarthy and find her really funny but, sadly, I just didn't get it.

ReRun - McCarthy has become a very unlikeable 1 trick pony
How many times can she try to re-run the same unlikeable character? Rude, crude, fat slovenly and just plain bad. McCarthy has gone to this well too many times and there's nothing left. She is a one-trick pony.

What's funny about fat, unkempt and classless? What's entertaining about a user, a grifter, an obnoxious sociopath? Do you really want to put money in the pockets of people who make these worthless films that have no redeeming value whatsoever? They'll only make more of this crap.

The weekly sitcom MIKE & MOLLY that made her famous started out okay but has devolved into the hopeless mess it is today. McCarthy's Molly character there is almost as repugnant as the one in BRIDESMAIDS, IDENTITY THIEF and now TAMMY. Glad to see this movie is flopping at the box office on its opening weekend.
If you're a Melissa McCarthy fan then this is right up your alley
I'm very surprised at all the negative reviews this film has received as I believe those who rated it negatively aren't accepting the movie for what it is. It is your typical Melissa McCarthy movie and for me that is a good thing. Her character in this film is almost identical to her character from "Identity Thief" but I don't have a problem with it like others do as I feel that is her comedic strong point. She isn't afraid to go that extra mile for a laugh. If you're on the fence on whether to rent or buy this movie just ask yourself if you liked her in Bradesmaids and Identity Thief and if your answer is yes, you will not be disappointed with her performance here.
